Gilded Age Mansion
Located on 100 acres in Richmond, Virginia, Maymont Mansion is a National Register Historic Site that was once the home of millionaire James H. Dooley. The grounds also include an Italian and Japanese garden.
The 55 room mansion was completed in 1928 at a cost of over $5 million. Its interiors were designed by Ogden Codman, Jr., who was born in Italy and studied at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Rome.
The house’s interiors were decorated with furnishings from around the world. It had three full bathrooms, a full elevator, and central heat. It included a ballroom that could accommodate up to 1,200 guests. The home was designed in a style that was reminiscent of European palaces.
The interiors of the house feature asymmetrical arrangements of tones, a combination of traditional and exotic styles, and juxtapositions of patterns. Robert Frost lived in the house from 1920 to 1929. He wrote some of his most memorable verses in the Dutch Colonial farmhouse.
