The art of knitting has existed for centuries. It derived directly from the Middle East and made its way through Europe around the 5th century. Although wool & knittng are popular in today’s age, ancient Egyptians used delicate cotton to produce their equipment. The amazing patterns and textile designs of the Middle East aesthetic were soon practiced around the world.

    What Is Knitting?

Knitting is a special technique to create material out of fabric, wool, yarn, or cotton with at least two needles. However, knitting began with the Nålebinding technique, which involves continuous looping to produce a textile pattern and only one needle.

    The History of Knitting

Knitting became fashionable throughout the 14th century, in part due to the influence of Christianity. Spanish royalty commissioned Muslim knitters to produce various items such as socks, clothing, and pillows to fill their homes. The demand for knitted materials rose remarkably throughout the 18th century, so much so, that people began knitting for work. Families would spend their entire lives producing handcrafted materials for a living.

Of course, over time, machines took away manual labor. However, the value of hand-made materials is still treasured. During the Second World War, Britain asked its citizens to produce knitted items for the military. The items were a sign of affection and boosted morale to see beautifully handcrafted items made from home.

    Knitting Today

Due to the global pandemic, many found themselves bored while at home. People have taken to knitting as a new hobby and continue to create beautiful materials. Knitting not only lowers boredom but influences creativity within everyone. The University of College London showed that engaging in artistic interests lowers stress levels. Knitting is a wonderful way to relieve stress, develop useful skills, and create something beautiful. The attraction of something handmade exceeds anything created in a factory. There are many more benefits to knitting  such as:

    Proven to Lower Stress

Knitting brings calm and happiness to the artist. People find peace when creating something of their own. Mistakes can be easily fixed and in the end, knitting provides an actual material. You will feel accomplished after completing a pair of socks made by your own two hands.

    Helps with Chronic Pain

Knitting is a great way to escape from physical and mental pain. It provides a distraction from the outside world and focuses the mind on one task and goal. This balances the brain and develops endorphins by creating a piece.

    Creates a Social Atmosphere

Knitting does not have to be enjoyed alone. There are community programs that meet to discuss techniques and show their creations. It’s a great way to make friends and build a community over a shared passion.

Knitting has been around for centuries and no matter how far technology advances, it will continue to stay. Knitting is a great way to relieve stress and dive into an artistic world filled with a passionate community. The Art of Knitting is surely alive.
