Acyn, or acyn in Welsh, is a small town located in the county of Montgomery in east Tennessee. The town was founded in 1819 and by 1830 had a population of 236. Acyn was originally called Bentonville after General Andrew Jackson’s home, but the name was changed to Acyn when the post office opened in 1836. The town rose to prominence due to its cotton mills which were operated by the Millers Company until they went bankrupt in 1907. Today, Acyn remains a small town with a population of just over 1,000 people.

The Millers Company was one of the earliest cotton manufacturers in Tennessee and began operations in 1836 on land purchased from General Andrew Jackson. By 1907, however, competition from overseas and deteriorating economic conditions forced the company into bankruptcy. The mills were subsequently closed and most buildings were demolished although some have been preserved as part of the Acyn Historic District which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
