So it’s time to start applying to colleges. With so many available university programs around the world, how are you supposed to narrow it down to the best colleges for you?
You’re on limited time, but we’re here to help. Keep reading to learn how to choose the right college for your goals.
Talk to an Advisor
If you’re still in high school, your student advisor is going to be one of your best resources when it comes to finding the best university for you. These advisors have plenty of experience placing students exactly where they belong.
Advisors are able to give you recommendations based on your test scores, interests, and even your personality. Don’t be afraid to make an appointment, even if you’re not sure what you want yet.
These counselors can also help you figure out how to get into college in the first place.
Research Available Programs
Not all colleges have the same major and minor programs available. Some colleges are known for things like teaching tracks and nursing programs while others specialize in art or STEM fields.
From the school’s homepage, look for a link for “academics” or “prospective students” if you’re struggling to find what the school has available.
Look Into Scholarships and Costs
College is expensive. It’s important that you know whether or not a school is within your budget before you bother applying.
If a school seems out of range for you, look at their scholarship and financial aid programs. Even Ivy League schools tend to have programs for low-income students so that they’re able to attend.
If you’re not sure whether or not you qualify, don’t be afraid to contact the admissions department directly. They’ll be happy to guide you.
If you can, try to visit campuses before you make your decision. You don’t really know what to expect until you see a school in person.
Many schools have open house days for prospective students. Even if you can’t make it to one of those, you may be able to get a campus tour from a current student or someone from the admissions office.
Schedule a tour via the phone or online portal of the university in question. Again, if you’re unsure whether or not this is an option for you, contact the university.
Where are you trying to go?
Many students choose to stay at local schools, at least for the first year or two, so they’re able to save money. Others have destinations in mind.
Your location matters. You’re going to be at the school for several years, so it’s best if you choose a location that you like. For example, if you’re someone who needs the sun and warmth, the University of Fairbanks might not be for you.
That’s How to Choose The Right College
Figuring out how to choose the right college is tough when there are so many options. With the right advisor and the right plan, you’ll find yourself the best university for you and your goals. Get ready to advance your academic career!
