4 Things To Do When You’re Stuck In a Rut

Are you stuck in a rut? If you are, you know how frustrating it can be. It can leave you feeling lost, unmotivated, frustrated, or depressed. It can lead to poor choices that can negatively impact your overall well-being or make it difficult to follow your usual routines.

However, there are plenty of things you can do to get unstuck. The trick lies in not only finding the motivation to do so but also in remembering that taking care of yourself needs to be non-negotiable. Here are four things that could help you get your life back on track.

    Table of Contents

    • 1. Make Good Sleep a Priority
    • 2. Shake Up Your Routine
    • 3. Beware of the Comparison Trap
    • 4. Set Realistic Goals

    1. Make Good Sleep a Priority

If you could rate the quality of your sleep, what would it be? When you’re in a rut, sleep can be hit or miss. This rings especially true if you’re feeling anxious or upset, or if you haven’t been making the healthiest choices when it comes to food, drink, or exercise.

To start with, remember that two of the most important factors for sleeping well are your mindset and your health. If even just one falls off your radar, chances are the quality of your sleep will suffer. It would also be beneficial to take a closer look at your sleeping situation.

Whether you do this by trying out a Sleeptracker to evaluate your sleep, by updating your mattress or bedding, or by doing a complete overhaul of your wind-down routine, chances are you’ll see improvements before you know it. Once you’re well-rested, your entire outlook will improve.

    2. Shake Up Your Routine

When you’re in a rut, even the smoothest of routines can be challenging to follow. Not only might you lack motivation, but you might also end up losing interest in important things such as work, home, and even your family and friends.

While maintaining your responsibilities during this time can be hard or even feel impossible, remember that even the slightest variations to your routine can help to change your perspective.

Consider taking a weekend (or longer) getaway for a complete change of scenery. If that’s not possible, think on a smaller scale — take a different route to work, or pop into a new-to-you coffee shop. Take your kids to the park and strike up a conversation with another parent or make an appointment to get your hair done. Little changes throughout your day might be just what you need.

    3. Beware of the Comparison Trap

If there’s one thing that can make this situation seem worse, it’s comparing your life to everyone else’s. It can be easy to lose yourself down the rabbit hole of social media or what your friends or next-door neighbors are up to.

As hard as it might be, directing your focus on your situation is one of the most important steps you’ll take here. Next to coming to terms with where you are, you need to accept it as your temporary reality while realizing a rut does not define you.

You might even want to consider taking a break from social media for a while, if not for good. Doing so could help you regain your focus where it’s needed while freeing you from the inevitable comparison trap.

    4. Set Realistic Goals

If there’s ever a time to set new goals for yourself, being stuck in a rut is one of them. However, be mindful of your situation and intentional in your choices. Make the goals realistic so they’re attainable. This is important not just for boosting your confidence, but for the improvements in health and overall well-being you’ll gain as well.

For instance, try setting a goal to increase your daily movement. Since physical activity is known to balance out moods and boost endorphins, be sure to make this a priority. Start small and work your way up. Even 15 minutes a day will make a big difference.

If you need downtime, try setting a reading goal. Choose books that will enrich and enlighten you.

Being in a rut is tough, but remember that it’s not permanent and you’re not alone. By recognizing your situation and doing things that will help you feel better overall, you’ll be back to smooth sailing in no time.
